What is Botulinum Toxin (Botox)?

Botulinum toxin is a freeze dried purified protein which relaxes muscles by temporarily stopping the message which tells certain muscles in our face to move. This movement is what causes a wrinkle, for example, when we frown.

Botox® is a prescription only medicine (POM) and can only be prescribed by a dentist, doctor or nurse with the prescribing qualification, after a face to face assessment and consultation with said prescriber.

Allergan’s Botox® is a licensed brand of Botulinum toxin A.

How Does Botox Work?

The toxin blocks the transition of chemical messages from the nerve to the muscle so that the muscle stays in a resting state for a period of 3-4 months on average.

Botox only remains in our bodies for 3-4 days but its affects can last for 3-4 months.

Preventing this movement allows the skin to recover.

Does Botox Hurt?

A very fine needle is used and generally this treatment is not described by most as painful and can be well tolerated with no anaesthetic.

What is Botox Used to Treat

Most commonly treated areas are forehead lines i.e. when we look up, frown lines and crows feet i.e. lines around our eyes when we smile.

In some circumstances the lines may disappear but in most cases they will “soften”. Over time with repeated treatment skin tone and complexion can improve and frequency of treatment may be able to reduce.
